DiCaprio and Scorsese will send the devil to Hulu

Image There was a time when Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese wanted to bring The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America to the big screens together. Scorsese would be in charge of the shooting, and Leo would play the main role in the film. DiCaprio has long dreamed of adapting the book and playing Henry Howard Holmes, America's first recorded serial killer. However, the 19th century Hannibal Lecter performed by DiCaprio will remain an unfulfilled dream of moviegoers, as "The Devil in the White City" has turned from a planned feature film into a series for the online service Hulu.

DiCaprio and Scorsese will act as executive producers of the project, but their functions will probably be limited to this. Leo is unlikely to star in a streaming platform drama, and at the most you can count on Scorsese to lead the filming of the pilot. There is no official information yet, and it is not known who will write the screenplay.

Eric Larson's original piece tells two parallel stories. One concerns the creation of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, the other concerns the aforementioned Holmes. Two men, handsome and incredibly knowledgeable in their work, personify America's rapid advance into the 20th century. One of them is the architect Daniel Hudson Burnham, director of works at the Chicago exhibition, the second is the murderer Henry Howard Holmes, who built a hotel near the fairground. His hotel was a real torture castle, equipped with a gas chamber and a crematorium. Burnham overcame many difficulties to transform the wetlands of Jackson Park into the so-called White City, while Holmes used his charm and popularity of the exhibition to find victims.

“The Devil in the White City” combines human exploits and cruelty, the beauty of the World's Fair and the terrible adventures of a serial killer, and the television format is more suitable for such a large-scale story. However, the news about the Hulu project will certainly disappoint those who hoped to see DiCaprio in the form of a maniac.
