Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios have sued independent studio Axanar Productions and its chief executive Alec Peters for movieing an unofficial Star Trek spin-off titled Axanar. According to the Variety edition, the authors of the project intended to raise funds for funding by crowdfunding.

The official website of the project specifically mentioned its non-commercial nature, as well as the lack of intention to exploit someone else's intellectual property in the form of selling goods with its symbols or releasing a movie on digital media.

However, the plaintiffs did not appreciate the moviemakers' declarative altruism. The documents submitted to the court emphasize that the producers of “ Axanar ” intended to "use images and characters that they do not own" and presented the project "as another movie project in the Star Trek series.

The movie's website claims that movieing will start in January 2016, the release date at the time of this writing was not specified. Its authors were asked to raise 638 thousand dollars on the Kickstarter platform and another 565 thousand dollars on the Indiegogo platform.

"We intended to spend all the funds donated to us on making a good movie in the spirit of Star Trek. We are real fans of the series. They fought with the wrong ones," Alec Peters said in a statement.
