Paramount Drops Action Against Star Trek Creators

Paramount Pictures has abandoned its plans to sue the creators of an amateur movie set in the Star Trek universe. According to the publication Deadline, this was announced at a press conference dedicated to the release of the movie "Star Trek 3: Infinity", the producer of the project JJ Abrams. "It wasn't the best way to communicate with the fanbase," he admitted.

As a reminder, in December 2015, Paramount and CBS Studios filed a joint lawsuit against the independent studio Axanar Productions and its head Alec Peters, who announced his intention to make a movie called "Star Trek: Axanar". The authors of the project announced a fundraising by crowdfunding on the Kickstarter platform, and announced the participation in the movie of actors Richard Hatch and Keith Vernon, familiar to the audience from the TV series Battlestar Galactica. In total, about one million dollars was collected "from the people 's money", movieing was planned to start in January 2016.

The moviemakers emphasized its non-commercial nature, as well as respect for other people's intellectual property, but these arguments seemed to the representatives of Paramount unconvincing. The filing of lawsuits has sparked a sharp backlash from the Star Trek fan community. Apparently, Paramount's management considered that the reputational damage from the litigation would be excessive, especially in the anniversary year for the entire franchise, and ultimately abandoned the prosecution.
