Director Taika Waititi has abandoned plans to make a movie about a chimpanzee named Bubbles, who lived in Michael Jackson's house for many years. According to Collider, the director chose instead to movie the Japanese manga Akira.

Michael Jackson took a young chimpanzee, whom he named Bubbles, from a Texas research facility in 1983. Soon, the singer's pet began to accompany him during all concert tours and official visits. Jackson and Bubbles' friendship lasted until the mid-2000s. The matured chimpanzee began to show aggression characteristic of this species of primates, and it became dangerous to keep it at home. Bubbles was sent to a special shelter in Florida, where he still lives.
