The next version of Android will receive significant changes

This year Google is releasing the fresh Android 10 OS, also known as Android Q. Unlike the current version 9 Pie, the new Android will lose its usual navigation system. Instead of the "Back" and "Home" buttons, the tenth Android will have a gesture control system familiar from iOS devices.

The innovations are already built into the raw build of Android, which passes the necessary tests. The abandonment of button navigation and the transition to gestures was first applied by Apple in its iPhone X in 2017.

Gestures instead of buttons

The gradual modernization of the control system began in 2018, when the developers removed in the ninth Android the button for launching the screen with active applications in the operating memory. To get to this screen in a smartphone without an additional shell, the user just swipes across the screen from left to right.

Today, the android system dictates its own rules to manufacturers of mobile devices. A standard smartphone under her control has touch or virtual navigation buttons. Today they are still an integral part of the mobile system, so even companies that produce smartphones with proprietary software interfaces support the usual Android control system, for example, the same Meizu with its mTouch.

If all the novelties of the test version go to the final assembly, the mobile system will be completely controlled by gestures. In the new Android, the so-called "swipes" are expected - instead of the standard pressing of the "Back" button to return to the menu one step back, users will swipe from right to left at the bottom of the screen.

Another system, mobile iOS, has effectively deprived gesture navigation of another alternative by removing the Home button with a built-in Touch ID fingerprint scanner. Not everything is so clear about open source android.

Many manufacturers of Android smartphones have their own interfaces that complement the base OS. Such major players as Samsung - One UI, Huawei - EMUI, Xiaomi is promoting its MIUI, there is a proprietary interface Flyme OS and Meizu has graphic shells. The vendor has the right to offer his vision of the navigation system, keeping the traditional controls instead of gestures in Android devices. At the same time, brands that produce smartphones on a pure Android OS (for example, Nokia), in all likelihood, will be deprived of such a choice.

What's new

In addition to changing the navigation on the smartphone, the new Android will receive a special mode that simulates desktop operating systems. The shell will become active if there is an external monitor connected via a docking station. The stylized interface includes window mode, taskbar and other tools familiar from desktop Windows, macOS, and more.

In addition, the new Android will be complemented by an expanded set of features for developers, which will provide more options for customizing parameters. Among the innovations of Android Q, the appearance of an interface in a dark color is expected, which is also announced in the latest iOS 13. The dark theme has ceased to be used in Android since 2014 after the release of Android 5 with a light skin Material UI, which is relevant until now.

In addition, a standard for face identification is expected to appear in the OS. Its algorithms will complement the new Android 10. Today, many modern smartphones have a similar function, but its presence is directly related to the development of mobile device manufacturers.

An official introduction to Android Q (the final name of the OS is still unknown) is expected at the annual Google I / O event scheduled for early May 2019.
