The Musical of a Lifetime

Image At one time, director Richard Linklater spent 12 years filming the drama "Boyhood" in order to show the most reliable process of growing up a child. Years of work paid off handsomely: the picture hit the budget 11 times, earned 97% "freshness" on Rotten Tomatoes and received six Oscar nominations. Today it became known that Linklater is waiting for another exciting film marathon. The Hollywood experimenter will devote the next 20 years of his life to working on the film version of the famous musical "We are going, we are going, we are going" (Merrily We Roll Along).

The premiere of the musical by George Firth and Stephen Sondheim took place in 1981. Its plot is based on the play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, written back in the mid-30s. The original Broadway production of We Ride, Ride, Ride won the Drama Desk for Best Libretto and was nominated for Tony for Best Music. Twenty years later, the musical made its West End debut and immediately won three Laurence Olivier awards.

We Ride, Ride, Ride follows the talented composer Franklin Shepard, who ditched old friends and his Broadway career to become a Hollywood producer. Fans of musical theater meet the protagonist at the peak of his fame, after which the story gradually fades into the past.

Naturally, Linklater will shoot the film in a different chronological order. At first, fragments will go into work when Shepard was a young musician, and it will take a couple of decades for the opening scenes of the picture. The cast will be headed by Blake Jenner (The Losers), Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) and Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird). Some foreign sources claim that Jenner will show the process of turning Franklin into a movie mogul, while others believe that Blake will play the songwriter Charlie Kringas, and Platt will embody the image of the main character of the picture. As for Feldstein, our colleagues have no disagreements regarding her heroine: Beanie got the role of theater critic Mary Flynn.

The intriguing film project will be financed by Blumhouse.
