Steven Spielberg will return to the purple fields

Image Steven Spielberg is ready to refute the popular opinion that one cannot enter the same river twice. In 1985, the legendary Hollywood director filmed the poignant drama "Flowers in the Purple Fields" based on the novel of the same name by Alice Walker. According to Deadline, 23 years later, Stephen agreed to take part in the creation of a new film adaptation of the famous work about the difficult life of the African American girl Celia.

Walker's novel went on sale in 1982. A year later, Alice became the first black writer to win a Pulitzer Prize for a fiction book. Although Walker's work has delighted literary critics and ordinary readers, there have been several attempts to remove it from stores and libraries. The fact is that the novel contained scenes of a sexual nature and rather strong expressions, and also touched upon such painful topics as racism, sexism, pedophilia and domestic violence. In 2013, the American Library Association ranked Flowers of the Purple Fields 17th on the list of most censored books of the 20th century.

The film adaptation of Walker's novel was released in 1985, becoming one of the first serious dramatic works by Steven Spielberg. The film earned rave reviews in the press, almost tenfold paid back its $ 15 million budget and received 11 Oscar nominations. To the disappointment of the filmmakers, at the 58th ceremony of presenting the main film awards of the world, the name "Flowers of purple fields" was not heard even once. Many respected critics to this day believe that the members of the American Film Academy simply robbed Spielberg and the company, which should have won at least the Best Picture of the Year category.

The soundtrack of the famous musician and producer Quincy Jones played an important role in the success of the 1985 film. Unsurprisingly, 20 years later, a Broadway musical based on Flowers was created. In 2006, he received 11 nominations for America's premier theater award, Tony. The show delighted connoisseurs of musical theater until February 2008. Seven years later, the musical was revived. Its new version proved equally successful and won a Grammy, an Emmy and two Tony Awards.

It is the Broadway musical that will form the basis for the new film adaptation of Walker's work. The film's production team will include Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey, who played a key role in the 1985 film and contributed to the 2005 musical production.

The project is in the early stages of development, and therefore insiders still find it difficult to say whether the current troupe of the Broadway musical will take part in it and whether Steven Spielberg plans to take on the director's functions.
