According to Deadline , Lee planned to make a film about the confrontation between heavyweight boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier immediately after the completion of Life of Pi. Universal was hesitant to give the sports tape the green light, so Ang was forced to turn his attention to the war movie Billy Lynn's Long Walk at Half-Time in Football to create which he applied a revolutionary format - 3D with a frequency of 120 frames per second.

After " The Long Walk " went into post-production, Lee decided to return to the idea of using new technology to create a boxing drama.
