The British have named the best American films

The British media corporation BBC has compiled a list of the top 100 American films in history based on a poll in which sixty-two famous world film critics took part.

Any tapes filmed with the money of Hollywood studios and American investors could get into the selection. The most represented on the list were works by Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg - five each. Thirty-two of the hundred films were directed by directors born outside the United States.

The oldest film on the list was the 1915 war drama The Birth of a Nation, which made it possible to cover the history of cinema for the entire last century.
