Are Hollywood studios preparing for a revolution?

Image In recent years, the line between the worlds of film and television has practically disappeared. Just a couple of decades ago, many actors considered filming a TV series as a springboard for big cinema. Today, Hollywood stars willingly go to work on TV, where they are offered really interesting roles and strong scripts. The heyday of the golden era of television has also led to skyrocketing budgets for series and television films. It is no longer surprising that the online service Netflix can spend $ 90 million on the creation of the fantasy action movie "Brightness" and do without a theatrical release. New Zealand-based Stuff shares rumors that film and TV may take another important step towards each other.

According to insiders, several large Dream Factory studios have begun another round of discussions on reducing the time period between movie and video releases. Previously, the duration of the so-called theatrical window was about six months. Since the release of films on cassettes or disks had to wait for six months, many viewers managed to lose interest in them. With the development of online cinemas, the issue of reducing the waiting time for digital release of films has become even more urgent. Hollywood studios have already managed to shorten this period a couple of times, but their initiatives are constantly opposed by the owners of cinemas. When Disney announced in 2010 that it planned to release a DVD of Alice in Wonderland within 14 weeks of the film's premiere, many chains have threatened to remove the blockbuster from the box office.

Cinema releases generate huge revenue for studios. Nevertheless, the majors are forced to give the cinema chains about half of the amount they earn and lose a huge number of viewers who, in principle, do not go to the theaters. These people prefer to watch movies at home, where they will not be bothered by crunchy popcorn lovers and screaming children.

It is only natural that many Hollywood companies are thinking about ways to reduce the theater window. The previous attempt to solve this difficult problem was made at the beginning of last year, but then the idea turned into a failure due to the fact that each studio developed its own distribution plan. It is possible that this time the majors will act as a united front and offer cinemas some kind of good deal. The ideological inspirers of the Hollywood revolution are Warner Bros. Studios. and Universal. Both are part of large-scale media corporations with a huge number of TV channels and online services. These companies, of course, will benefit from offering customers to watch films in their homes simultaneously with their release on the big screen. Some paintings can be sold digitally for a price comparable to the price of a movie ticket, and some may even be distributed for free to expand the audience of subscribers to cable channels and streaming platforms. It is possible that this initiative will also be supported by the Walt Disney Empire, which is currently preparing to launch its own online service.
