Rashomon to Become a Detective Series

Image The list of the most talented and influential figures of the 20th century cinema cannot be imagined without the name of Akira Kurosawa. During the life of the Japanese director, dozens of remakes of his films were shot. It is enough to recall only the Italian spaghetti western "Django" and the American "Magnificent Seven". Kurosawa's works do not lose their relevance today. As it became known to Deadline, Steven Spielberg's company Amblin Entertainment has acquired the rights to create a series based on the Rashomon movie.

The plot of the 1950 film was based on the stories of Ryunosuke Akutagawa "In the Thicket" and "Rashomon Gate". Japanese audiences took Kurosawa's work rather coolly, but she brought the director of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and a special award from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Akira created a completely new cinema genre, telling the story of the murder of a samurai and the rape of his wife on behalf of several characters in the film. Some time later, the so-called "Rashomon Effect" was named in honor of the picture - a phenomenon of subjective perception of reality, when eyewitnesses of an event cannot agree on what happened.

Amblin's television executives realized that the unreliable storytellers' narrative format works best for mysterious crime stories. Judging by preliminary information, the series based on "Rashomon" is being implemented in the format of a criminal anthology. In this case, each of its seasons will be a separate detective story told from the point of view of the most diverse participants in the incident.
