”Parallel Worlds”: in Zamyatinsky places

Image Dystopia does not give directors, screenwriters and authors of novels peace, and although it is already difficult to invent something new, a gradual transformation of how the brave new world should be arranged is taking place.

Before talking about this, we note that the painting Juan Diego Solanas Parallel Worlds is good for everyone, except for the ending. Well-written main characters, excellent play by Kirsten Dunst ( Eden from theupper world), music, magical landscapes, drive and reasonable sociality, even the political context (in the confrontation between the first world and the third there are no more guilty and right, but the first will win anyway) - in general, this average and well-tailored melodrama could have remained one of hundreds of similar ones, if not for the same ending. He gives the tape a historical dimension, while being as vulgar as possible.

What is its difficulty? At first glance, the love story of a rich girl and a humble guy ( Adam from theDownworld(Jim Sturgess) with a scientific vein should have ended in exactly the same Hollywood way it ended. A total happy ending without the right to pardon: everything is just like a thirteen-year-old girl ordered, it is impossible to get rid of the feeling of some kind of syrup that has been poured into your ears.

However, if we remember the beginning of dystopia as a genre (the novel Yevgeny Zamyatin "We" ) and the highest point of this tradition ("1984" by George Orwell ), then we will understand this: history has again made a turn around its axis (or movement in a spiral - as it is more convenient to understand), and there is still only one way out of the light madness that surrounds us.

The logical movement from Zamyatin to Orwell was that if at the beginning of the twentieth century only love could be a graft against totalitarianism (adjusted for the illusory rebellion against the system), only it threw a person outside his sociality, then by the 50s it turned out that no love works anymore. She becomes part of a totalitarian deception, a bait for simpletons yearning for truth and liberation. With varying variations, both versions of the main philosophical theme of the last hundred years have been played up by mass culture, which is always very sensitive to the noise of the times.

The denouement of this collision seemed to be found in Blade Runner, one of the most significant films in the history of world cinema. There is no place for love at all, it is excluded from the context of the problem, and an escape from a totalitarian dystopia is a solution to the dispute between Rene Descartes and Friedrich Nietzsche, which Ridley Scott did not hesitate to quote. Freedom of the rational versus freedom of chaos - somewhere here it would be worth looking for the truth, if the same popular culture had not managed to reduce this high battle to the level of a shootout in a pub (for more on this, see Total Recall).

But the question hasn't gone anywhere: if the lower world, with oil dripping here and there, and Zhiguli cars and the upper world with vintage restaurants - equally do not put a person into anything (and who does not put - the state or corporations - the tenth thing), then where to go to the common man? After all, being poor, he is bound hand and foot, and becoming rich, he cannot take a step.

And fall in love and everything will work out - Parallel Worlds tell us, as if finishing a novel "We", in which the world of reasonable and customer-oriented prosperity is simply not built yet. It is difficult to believe in this sugary stupidity, but mass cinema, middle peasants, they do not exist for this. They exist in order for a new Orwell to appear (and no longer in literature, which has lost its positions in explaining the most important, but in the cinema), which would tell - as clearly and terribly as possible - what price we are pay for all these pleasant delusions.

The price will be great. In the meantime, you can admire Kirsten Dunst, she is wonderful as good.
