Review of the series ”Dostoevsky” by Vladimir Khotinenko
In the last week of May, the channel "USA 1" broadcast the domestic series Vladimir Khotinenko "Dostoevsky" . The long-awaited television project, timed to coincide with the 190th anniversary of the great writer, covers the 30-year period of Fyodor Mikhailovich's life - from the moment he was sent to Siberian exile in December 1849 until the writing of his main novel The Brothers Karamazov in 1879 year.After watching the first episodes in the media, controversy immediately erupted - both the public and the criticism split into two irreconcilable camps. Well, at least not concentration lined up. Analyzing a multitude of opinions, judgments and assessments, one can be sure of only one thing: the block of Dostoevsky will always rise above the heaps of all kinds of interpretations of his personality. The versatility of the recognized world genius cannot, and should not, fit into a single television movie. And in this Khotinenko was right, focusing his attention on only one thing. The question is what could interest the viewer more: the personal, intimate life of the writer or his designs, the nature of writing, the search for a plot, that is, "creative cuisine." In this regard, the format of the TV project gives an obvious answer to all puritans from literature.  According to the leading actor Evgeny Mironov in one of the interviews, most of all he was embarrassed that this was the story of the writer's personal life: “I really wanted to somehow find those moments, those scenes - and, perhaps, introduce new ones - where creativity will be shown ... And Dostoevsky is a television product. That is, for the majority. I understand that if we were shooting a feature film, we would certainly be doing something different. Yes, I was interested in the analysis of the creative impulse. But there are twists and turns that interested me too - family, personal. Because the material for the writer's novels grew out of them. ”Over the course of seven episodes, the viewer, to his great pleasure or displeasure, is bombarded with the details of Dostoevsky's uneasy relationship with his “literary fellows”, passionate novels and throwing gambling addicts; painful memories of the years spent in hard labor. And when did you manage to write in such volumes? Coming up with stories? - "commentators" and highbrow critics asked. I had time. He also had time to doubt the world order, being a deeply religious person. All the literary material, plots and heroes of the writer - here they lived nearby, often - within Dostoevsky himself.  The leading actor Yevgeny Mironov has already worked with Vladimir Khotinenko in a landmark for both the painting "Muslim", where the issue of "other consciousness", which has become the main focus of any discussion today, in terms of its artistic impact was an order of magnitude higher than many speeches of human rights activists. Evgeny Mironov "with his wonderful facial expressions, with a hidden tremor of inner life" is, of course, Dostoevsky's hero. At one time, the actor brilliantly played the role of Prince Myshkin in Vladimir Bortko's television project "The Idiot" based on Dostoevsky's novel of the same name. Therefore, the world of the writer, filled with contradictory characters, is understandable to the viewer through Mironov's play. Indeed, in Dostoevsky both Rogozhin and Myshkin , and Sonechka Marmeladova .The artist's right is to show a genius in his ordinary, "human" life, overwhelmed by passions, who passionately seeks the meaning of this very life. In the episode when Dostoevsky goes to Optina Pustyn with the philosopher Soloviev , the writer holds a boiled egg in his hands and asks the question: “Perhaps what is happening here on earth is an experiment? And they just decided to see from above: will it work out here, will they survive or not? " This is the question of Ivan Karamazov - the hero of his main work. It's a Human question.  A separate line is about the cast of the TV movie. They brilliantly coped with the role of Dostoevsky's "wife" - Chulpan Khamatova, who played Maria Isaeva , and Alla Yuganova, his "quiet angel" and the muse of Anna Grigorievna Snitkina , to whom Dostoevsky wrote in his personal letters composed odes.The life of the writer, his storehouse of images and plots, is happening before the eyes of the viewer. Occasional meetings flashed - the Mysteries, Stavrogin, Raskolnikov, Nastasya Filipovna ... A polylogue is formed in which the viewer is involved, but in such a difficult conversation someone always remains deaf.
