Martha Higareda (Dear Doctor) has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Netflix futuristic drama Altered Carbon, starring Joel Kinnaman (Suicide Squad) as the male lead. James Purefoy (Hap & Leonard) has been confirmed for a key supporting role in the series by writer / executive producer Laeta Kalogridis (Isle of the Damned). Dichen Luckman ("The Last Ship") and Leonardo Nam ("Western World") also received roles in the show produced by Skydance Television. This is reported by the publication Deadline.

The ten-part drama is based on the cyberpunk fantasy novel of the same name by Richard Morgan in 2002. The action in the series takes place in the 25th century, when the human mind learned to digitize, and transfer the soul from one body to another. Former soldier of the elite interstellar unit Takeshi Kovacs, known as the Messenger (Kinnaman), who has been in prison for 500 years, is using modern technology to enter the future, the coming of which he tried to prevent. He will get a chance for a new life on Earth if he can solve one single murder that happened in a world where technology has made death almost impossible.

Ygareda will play Christine Ortega, a smart and serious lieutenant in the Bay City Police Department. She and her family – emigrants from the northern zone of LaTam (formerly the territory of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador). Ortega followed in the footsteps of her father, a cop, who died heroically while doing his duty.

Purefoy's character, Lawrence Bancroft, is wealthy, powerful, and over five hundred years old. He is a man of contradictions, incredibly domineering, but at the same time surprisingly moral. His deep passion for all the pleasures of life can be compared to his need to exercise iron control over everything that falls into his circle of vision.

Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones) will direct the first episode.
