The sci-fi drama Altered Carbon will return for a second season with a new actor in the lead role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Other War) will play Takeshi Kovacs, portrayed by Yuel Kinnaman in the first season of the series. In addition, Alison Shapker ("Scandal") will share the duties of the showrunner of the series with Laeta Kalogridis. Neither the episode count nor the show's second season premiere date has been set yet.

In the first season of the Netflix streaming drama, Kinnaman played Kovacs, a mercenary from the past who has spent hundreds of years in cryogenic sleep and wakes up in the distant future to investigate one mysterious murder. In the future, they learned to move souls into bodies, and Kovacs receives a new body, previously owned by police officer Elias Riker, charged with a crime he did not commit. Using Riker's body, Kovacs unravels the case, which unexpectedly affects him. In the finale, Kovacs gets a new body, but the viewer sees only his silhouette.

In the series of novels by Richard Morgan, on which the series is based, Kovacs travels through the centuries in different bodies or, as they are called, shells. Thus, Mac will become the "new skin" for Kovacs.
