The Lord of the Rings trilogy star John Rhys-Davis has joined the cast of the television adaptation of Terry Brooks' fantasy novel Shannar, which MTV ordered in July 2014 for production. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The events in Shannar take place millennia after the destruction of our civilization. In the center of the ten-episode drama will be the descendants of the elven family of Shannar, who possess ancient magic, and whose adventures are constantly changing the future of the world. The first season of the show is based on the second book of the series " "The Elven Stones of Shannara". Production on the series begins in February in New Zealand.

Rhys-Davis will play the king of the elves, Evenin, the grandfather of Princess Amberley (Poppy Drayton). who ruled the kingdom of Arborlon for several decades along with his sons, Arion and Ander. Evenin did a lot of dubious things to keep the peace in the Four Lands, but when his beloved granddaughter is chosen to perform a dangerous task, his path also changes.

The cast of the series at the time of this writing appears: Ivana Bakero (" Pan's Labyrinth ") as Eretria; Austin Butler (The Carrie Diaries) as Will Omsword; Manu Bennett ("Arrow") as the druid Allanon and Aaron Yakubenko ("Spartacus: Blood and Sand") as the elven prince Ander.

The "Shannar" series, which began with the novel "Sword of Shannara" in 1977 , consists of over twenty-five books. Brooks is considered the second most popular contemporary author, writing in the fantasy genre, yielding the primacy to J.K. Rowling. MTV hopes Shannara will repeat the success of Game of Thrones (HBO) and Outlander (Starz).

Miles Millar and his Smallville partner Alfred Gough have been appointed showrunners for the television project and will share executive producing duties with Jon Favreau, Jonathan Liebesman, Brooks, Dan Farah and David Blocker. Libesman was appointed director of the first two episodes.

The next TV project with the participation of John Rees-Davis – mini-series "The Murder of Jesus".
