Hollywood is ready to release licensed copies two weeks after the premiere

Major Hollywood studios are discussing the feasibility of creating a new premium service for moviegoers. According to Bloomberg, we are talking about the opportunity to watch new movies using personal devices of different classes within a couple of weeks after the premiere.

It is alleged that the majors are ready to offer such a service at a one-time rental of a movie from $ 25 to $ 50. These numbers are conditional since, according to the head of Warner Bros. Kevin Tsujihara, the parties are only in the early stages of negotiations with distributors, who were previously categorically against such schemes, which, in their opinion, would significantly reduce their income.

So, in 2015, Regal Entertainment Group and Cinemark Holdings Inc., which own the largest movie theater chains in North America, boycotted movies by Paramount Pictures, which were supposed to be released for home viewing just seven weeks after their release.

Representatives from Universal Pictures also confirmed the very fact of such negotiations, but declined to clarify which compensation schemes are being offered.

Note that at the moment the gap between the rental and release of licensed copies of movies is on average about three months.
