Low-cost version of Windows Lite has been delayed due to browser incompatibility

A lighter version of the OS - the new Windows Lite, which could presumably be announced in May, was not ready to go out. As it turned out, the light version of the OS has become an inappropriate platform for the updated proprietary Microsoft Edge browser on the modern Chromium engine. For this reason, the official presentation of Windows Core OS (another name for the system) may take place only next year.

The Windows 10 Lite project is currently working on how to make the new lightweight version of the system compatible with the updated Microsoft Edge browser based on the Chromium engine. At the same time, the previous version of the EdgeHTML-based browser has deep integration with Windows Lite. To fully run the updated version of Edge, the operating system must support Win32 applications, which the light version of Windows does not yet have.

The initial version of Edge, based on Microsoft's proprietary solution, EdgeHTML, appeared in 2015 as an alternative to Internet Explorer. Such an Edge could not adequately compete with other Chromium-based browsers, so the company decided to refine its product to modern standards. As a result, a preview of the redesigned Chromium-based Edge went public in spring 2019. Any Windows 10 owner could download and test the updated browser.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has postponed the announcement of the new system indefinitely and has scheduled another series of OS tests for this summer. For this reason, the new Windows 10 Lite is not expected until next year. It is currently undergoing a series of tests on branded devices of the Surface family.

The concept of Windows Lite initially assumed that Microsoft's new operating product would primarily occupy the niche of budget laptops and computers. Such devices are widely used in the educational environment. At this stage, the leader in this segment is Google's Chrome OS solution. According to statistics, approximately 60% of American students and teachers use this platform on their devices, while globally this figure does not exceed 1%.

The name of the Microsoft product speaks for itself - the new Windows Lite received "ease" and quick installation due to the lack of some tools and services. Windows Lite's distribution path is similar to its main competitor Chrome OS - Microsoft has a proprietary application platform that can be used by users, including those who own Windows 10.
