Return to Chinatown

Image Chinatown by Roman Polanski is considered a classic of cinema. At one time, neo-noir secured the status of a Hollywood star for Jack Nicholson, and the online service Netflix intends to return to Los Angeles, full of scandals, lawlessness and corruption. The streaming giant asked David Fincher to produce the series that will be the prequel to the 1974 film.

Fincher will be co-writing the drama by Robert Towne, screenwriter for the original Chinatown. It is reported that the project will tell about the young Jack Gittes (played by Nicholson in Polanski's film), who starts his business in a place steeped in corruption. As a reminder, in Chinatown, Gittes was a private detective who got into the epicenter of secret machinations because of another case.

Chinatown has received 11 Oscar nominations and won only one category. In 1990, a sequel to the film, "Two Jakes", was released. The script for him was written by the same Robert Towne, and the shooting was headed by Nicholson himself. However, the film failed at the box office, and the producers abandoned plans to create a third part. In this regard, the question arises whether modern viewers need a prequel to Chinatown, because the creators of the series will have to find an actor who can become Nicholson's successor to play the role of young Gittes.

As for David Fincher, work on the prequel will mark the continuation of his fruitful collaboration with Netflix. The online service released the second season of Mindhunter in August, and Fincher is now preparing a black and white biopic, Munk, starring Gary Oldman for the platform.
