The Lord of the Rings prequel has found a director

Image The good news came from the Amazon online service camp. The streaming giant has decided on the name of the director of the two opening episodes of the series based on the book series J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". The honor to open a new chapter of the fantasy saga was entrusted to the Spaniard Juan Antonio Bayone.

The Barcelona native made his big-screen debut in 2007 with the horror film Shelter. The film won a ten-minute standing ovation in Cannes, recouped the budget many times over and brought Bayona the Goya Prize. Since then, the director has won this prestigious Spanish film award twice more.

Amazon bosses must have been impressed by the portfolio of the Catalan, who has gone from the creator of low-budget short films to the director of Hollywood blockbusters. Last year, Bayona directed his first movie with a price tag of over 100 million dollars, Jurassic World 2. The fifth installment of the dinosaur franchise received mixed reviews in the press, but became a huge box office hit and one of the highest grossing films in the history of cinema. Bayone also played into the hands of the fact that he had already worked for the good of North American TV: in 2014, he created the pilot episode of the horror film "Boulevard Horrors.

In March of this year, Amazon hinted that the prequel would unfold during the Second Age. Apparently, the creators of the series will shed light on what happened in Middle-earth a couple of millennia before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.

It is expected that the budget of the ambitious television project will be at least $ 1 billion. Recently, Amazon acquired another strong trump card in case someone from the viewers considered this huge amount insufficient argument for adding the project to the waiting list. The owners of the streaming giant have agreed to shoot on location in New Zealand, where work on the famous film trilogy by Peter Jackson took place.

It looks like the management of the online service is finally ready to move the series to the casting stage and begin casting for the roles of the heroes and villains of Middle-earth.
