FX is preparing a new adaptation of ”Shogun”

Image FX channel intends to replenish its impressive TV audience with fans of spectacular costumed dramas and connoisseurs of Japanese culture. As it became known to the Collider edition, the cable TV network is starting work on a mini-series based on the famous novel by James Clavell "Shogun".

The project was announced during the summer press tour of the US Television Critics Association. According to FX Executive Director John Landgraf, Emmy Award-winning Gene Kelly (Rome) and Ronan Bennett (Johnny D.) will adapt the book. The miniseries will be directed by Timothy Van Patten (Game of Thrones, Black Mirror).

Clavella's novel was published in 1975 and quickly won the title of world bestseller. The protagonist of a fascinating story is the sailor John Blackthorn, who became the first Englishman who had a chance to visit feudal Japan. In 1980, the book became the basis for an NBC miniseries, starring Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune and Yoko Shimada.

Shogun was the first series in American television history to be filmed entirely in the Land of the Rising Sun. In January 1981, the historical epic won three Golden Globes, including the award for Best Drama Series. That same fall, he was voted Best Miniseries at the 33rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

The production team for the new TV adaptation of Shogun will include Andrew MacDonald (Trainspotting), Michael De Luca (American Story X) and the late James Clavell's daughter, Michaela.
