Workaholic Spielberg

Image Steven Spielberg seems to be haunted. His drama "The Secret Dossier" is likely to receive several Oscar nominations, and in a couple of months one of the director's most anticipated projects, the fantastic film "Ready Player One", will open in theaters. However, the eminent filmmaker is already making plans for the future. And, according to the portal Deadline, after the fifth "Indiana Jones" Spielberg may realize another dream project - a remake of "West Side Story".

Work on a new chapter about the adventures of Indiana Jones has been going on since 2015. Spielberg's longtime colleague David Kepp was writing the sequel, which was originally due out next summer. However, due to the fact that Spielberg decided to wedge "The X-Files" into his schedule, the release of "Indiana Jones 5" was postponed a year ahead. Last fall, Kepp told reporters that the text of the film is completely ready and the only thing left is to agree on the shooting schedules.

According to the source, immediately before or shortly after working on the fifth installment of the cult franchise, Spielberg is going to shoot another film, which may just be a musical based on West Side Story, to which he confessed more than once.

For the first time, viewers saw the production of West Side Story back in 1957 on Broadway. It became a modern adaptation of the play about Romeo and Juliet. A few years later, a film musical by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, which is considered one of the best in its genre, came out on the big screens. The plot takes place in New York, where, against the background of the enmity between the two gangs, the love of Tony and Maria is born, which, like Shakespeare, had a tragic ending. The 1961 film won ten Academy Awards. The script for the new version is written by Tony Kushner (Lincoln).

Earlier, Spielberg also planned the drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which has already won such stars as Mark Rylance and Oscar Isaac, but work on the project stalled when it came to finding an actor for the role of little Edgardo. Spielberg listened to more than two thousand applicants, but never found a suitable one, and the script, according to insiders, needs to be improved.
