Emmy organizers to close miniseries loophole

Image The 70th Anniversary Primetime Emmy Awards took place just three months ago, and the American Television Academy has already begun preparations for a new TV awards season. As it became known to the TVLine edition, the next drawing of the most prestigious prize in the field of TV will bring some interesting surprises to TV series fans.

The academics decided that it was time to hand over golden statuettes to composers of not only fiction, but also documentary television projects: next fall, the name of the first winner in the category "Best Music in a Documentary Series or TV Movie" will be announced. The organizers of the Emmy also delighted the dance directors. If earlier they fought for only one award, now they will receive representation in two categories at once - "Best Choreography in a Reality Show" and "Best Choreography in a Fiction TV Project".

In addition, TV academics made minor changes to the voting system and extended the application deadline. Previously, only series that aired before May 31 were nominated. From now on, the Emmy organizers will also start taking into account TV shows in June, provided that they are posted on the Academy's special streaming platform at least a month before being shown on the air.

The main innovation will be the tightening of the rules for selecting candidates for the "Best TV Movie" category. The nomination for full-length projects is rightfully considered one of the most distressing in the history of the Emmy. It changed its name many times, and then merged and then separated from the category "Best Mini-Series". In 2014, academics decided to once again split the awards for TV films and mini-series. Nevertheless, loopholes remained in the rulebook that allowed multi-part projects to compete for the title of the best television film of the year.

If in the first two years real full-length films won gold statuettes, then serial dramas dominated this nomination. In 2016, an Emmy won a special Christmas episode of Sherlock, after which the Black Mirror series won the title of Best TV Movie for two years in a row. Academics worried about this situation and introduced a new rule according to which the duration of projects in this category should start from 75 minutes. By the way, the timing of the recent winner of the main television award in the world, the episode "Spaceship Callister", is 76 minutes. At the same time, last year's Emmy winner, the Sao Junipero series, under the new rules would have been left behind in this category.
