Emmy: More Shows, Fewer Awards

Image While the Emmy Awards are still considered the most prestigious awards in television, the ratings for the awards have been steadily declining. Over the past two years, the distribution of gold statuettes has been followed by a record low audience of 11.4 million people. As it became known to the publication Deadline, the American Television Academy will try to make the Emmy more attractive in the eyes of the public.

The Academy is currently negotiating a new contract with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, which will run from 2019 to 2026. In the event of a successful completion of the deal, America's four leading terrestrial networks will continue to air the Emmy awards one by one.

According to academics, the drop in Emmy TV ratings is due to the fact that viewers lack a bright show. Moreover, a few years ago they decided that the audience wanted to see only stars on the screen. As a result, the Academy almost removed the prizes for directing and script from the main awards, citing the fact that the average viewer does not know the nominees in these categories by sight. The Directors 'and Writers' Guilds of America rebelled against this decision, which threatened to start charging the Academy for the use of excerpts from TV series and TV films with the participation of the nominees.

In order to conclude the most profitable deal with the channel managers, the Academy may refuse some nominations. The Prime Time Emmy Awards are currently giving out awards in the 31st category. Television academics can bring some of them into their two-day Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which traditionally award prizes to guest actors, costume designers, make-up artists, editors, visual effects and other technicians.

According to the Academy's plan, as a result of the reduction in the number of awarded figurines, it will be able to saturate the main ceremony with entertainment blocks, and the channels will have more time for advertising.
