Crime and Punishment

Image Duchess Street Productions will tell you about one of the most high-profile crimes in UK history that helped change the UK judicial system. As it became known to the publication Deadline, the London studio is starting work on the biographical drama Reasonable Doubt.

The main character of the film will be the former nurse Anne Ming. In November 1989, a woman filed a complaint with the police about the disappearance of her daughter, 22-year-old Julie Hogg. Three months later, Julie's body was found walled up behind a plastic panel in the bathroom of her own apartment. The main suspect in the murder of the girl was her ex-boyfriend Billy Dunlop.

Billy appeared in court in 1991. The first hearing ended with the jury's votes divided equally. When the jury again failed to reach an agreement, the court released Dunlop from custody.

In 1998, Billy was sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting his new girlfriend. Ann learned that within the walls of the prison, Dunlop began to brag that he once managed to safely escape punishment for a crime. He was allowed to speak freely about Julie Hogg's murder under the so-called Double Responsibility Act, according to which an acquitted person cannot be prosecuted again in the same case. Ming has launched a vigorous campaign to change the rule of law eight hundred years ago. In 2005, the UK authorities finally amended the current legislation, and Dunlop was again brought to trial on charges of Hogg's murder. This time he was sentenced to life in prison.

Ann Ming will be portrayed by two-time BAFTA nominee Maxine Peak (Black Mirror).

The script of the film will be written by British Susan Everett, who previously worked mainly in the field of short films.
