Roberto Benigni whips out Pinocchio

Image In 2002, Roberto Benigni directed and starred in the film based on the famous "The Adventures of Pinocchio". The film received a humiliating 0% rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and earned the Italian a Golden Raspberry Award. According to The Hollywood Reporter, fate gave Benigni the opportunity to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the audience and take part in the creation of another film based on the plot of the ageless tale by Carlo Collodi.

The winner of the Oscar for the main role in the military tragicomedy Life is Beautiful will play the master Geppetto in the film of his compatriot Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah). Benigni last appeared on movie screens six years ago in the romantic comedy Roman Adventures. The script for the new version of "Pinocchio" seemed so interesting to Roberto that he finally decided to interrupt his rather prolonged sabbatical. “Everything came together in this project: a great character, a great story and a great director,” Benigni said.

The tale "The Adventures of Pinocchio" was written back in 1881. The work of Carlo Collodi has been translated into 300 languages of the world and is sold annually in circulation of 80 million copies.
