The Guild West and East Branch comprises more than 25,000 screenwriters who each year reward their colleagues for excellence in the film, television, radio and gaming industries. Traditionally, the WGA awards ceremony is held simultaneously on two coasts of the United States. Amber Ruffin entertained guests of New York City this year, and Patton Oswalt hosted the ceremony for the third time in a row.

Honorable Mentions for Lifetime Achievement in Film and Television went to three Academy Awards winner James L. Brooks (The Tongue of Tenderness, It Can't Be Better) and two Emmy winner Alison Cross (Shut Up and Serve). Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Harvey Milk) and biopic The X-Files authors Elizabeth Hannah and Josh Singer also received special prizes this year. The posthumous award for Outstanding Achievement in Animation went to renowned American comic book writer Len Wyne.
