Official: The original Ghostbusters will receive a sequel
Sony is launching the next film in the Ghostbusters franchise and has even found a director for the film. According to Variety, Jason Reitman ("Juno"), son of Ivan, the director of the first two films, will lead the development of the project.Reitman co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Keenan ("Scream"). The director plans to start filming this summer, and Sony is set to release a sequel in 2020. Insiders report that the tape will be a sequel to the original film and will not be associated with the 2016 remake. It is unknown if the iconic cast will return, and plot details remain under wraps. However, the director is reportedly already casting teenagers for four mysterious roles. Although the Okhotnikov reboot failed at the box office and received bad reviews, the franchise remains a priority for the film company. While rumors of a new film have been circulating for several years, Sony has been secretly looking for a director in recent months and has used the fake name Rust City to keep the news of the sequel a secret until its plans were revealed. At the same time, it is not yet clear whether the project is related to Dan Aykroyd's attempts to resurrect the franchise.  Sony and Reitman already partnered when the studio produced his Prime Candidate. Ghostbusters will be the director's first blockbuster, as he mainly directed films on a small budget, such as Up in the Air and Tully, which received a Golden Globe nomination.
