”Oscar” will slide into pop music
The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has begun preparations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards. The leaders of the organization announced a number of innovations that shocked both eminent artists and ordinary viewers.According to the Academy's official twitter, the Oscar's broadcast time will be reduced from four to three hours. In recent years, many participants in the ceremonies have complained that the event is godlessly prolonged. In addition, the four-hour broadcast negatively affected the Oscar ratings, since not every viewer is able to withstand such a telethon at the screen. However, the decision to shorten the duration of the event has its own fly in the ointment. ABC will probably keep the same amount of ads. Either he will increase the duration of ad units, or the ceremony will take pauses more often. Academics have already announced that from now on they will have to present some of the awards right during advertising breaks. If earlier the audience froze in anticipation of the announcement of the name of the next winner in real time, now they will see a whole series of key fragments of the ceremony in the recording in a significantly reduced version. Considering that the organizers of the event already gave only a few seconds for the winning speeches of the Oscar winners in the technical nominations, these categories risk being completely devalued. At the same time, the organizers of the ceremony always found time for lengthy and frankly unsuccessful scenes with the participation of the presenter, such as the trip of Jimmy Kimmel and Hollywood stars to the cinema near the Dolby Theater building.  The second innovation raised even more questions from viewers and film professionals. This spring, the Oscar's broadcast attracted 26.5 million viewers, the worst in its history. To make the world's main film awards ceremony more attractive to the public, the Academy is introducing a completely new category, tentatively titled "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Cinema". For years, film fans have been waiting for film academics to finally introduce categories for stuntmen and casting experts. Instead, the organization has followed the path of the MTV Movie Awards and Teen Choice Awards and is likely to begin presenting awards to the best blockbusters. To date, representatives of the Academy have not bothered to explain what they are going to consider as a measure of popularity. In the struggle for the title of the best picture of the year, expensive and high-grossing films have repeatedly participated. Suffice it to recall 2004, when the tape "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won 11 gold statuettes, including the main award of the evening. Several years ago, academics left behind the race for the title of the best film of the film comics "The Dark Knight". The decision caused such an outrage among viewers that the Academy expanded the number of nominees in this category from five to ten films. It seemed that this was enough for not only festival but also commercial film projects to get a chance to compete for the Oscar. However, now the American Film Academy for some reason divorces these films into different categories.  By its decision, the film organization runs the risk of devaluing both the new category and the Best Film of the Year nomination. The first participants will look like children who were not invited to an adult table at a big party. It turns out that the contenders for the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film nomination are not good enough to compete for the Oscar for Best Picture. On the other hand, with its new nomination, the Academy makes it clear that the participants in the battle for the main prize of the evening cannot be called popular paintings. Last year's Oscar winner in the Best Film of the Year category will probably argue with such a formulation of the question. Recall that the fantasy drama "The Shape of Water" earned more than $ 195 million at the worldwide box office with a modest budget of $ 19.4 million. The saddest thing is that the new nomination was introduced without a referendum with the participation of Academy members. This was reported by many film academics who criticized the twenty-fifth Oscar category on social networks. Rumor has it that the decision to add this nomination was pushed through by the management of ABC, which thinks that participating in the Oscars of Infinity War, Black Panther or Deadpool 2 will attract additional TV audiences to the screens.
