Academy Record Additions To Record

Image In early 2016, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences came under fire when only fair-skinned stars were nominated for Academy Awards in all four acting categories. After the hashtag OscarsSoWhite gained popularity on the Web, Academy President Sherrill Boone Isaacs announced that her organization will become much more active in the fight for gender and racial equality in the coming years. As it became known to Variety, American academics have taken another step towards fulfilling their promise.

Every year the Academy admits new members to its ranks. This time, the organization sent out a record 928 invitations. The ranks of academics may include rising Hollywood stars Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), veteran film and television veterans Toby Jones (Wayward Pines, Sherlock) and Hank Azaria ( The Simpsons "), the creator of the Potterian J.K. Rowling and many other famous filmmakers.

Forty-nine percent of the total invitees are women. If they all agree to join the film academy, the total representation of lovely ladies in the ranks of the organization will be increased to 31%. At the start of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, this figure was 25%. Even more impressive are the statistics on the struggle for racial equality. At the beginning of 2016, academics with white skin made up 92% of the organization's total membership. With this year's call, representatives of other races will be able to increase their representation in the Academy to 16 percent.

Thanks to a record replenishment, the total number of film academics could exceed 7,500. Already at the beginning of next year, they will have to take part in the selection of participants for the 91st Oscar ceremony. The main event in the world of cinema will take place on February 24, 2019 at the famous Hollywood cinema "Dolby".
