Julian Assange, whose figure and activity gave food for the movie by Bill Condon, is an Australian programmer, an undergraduate mathematician, a hacker since the pre-Internet era with the symbolic nickname Mendax (from Splendide Mendax by Horace - The Magnificent Liar). In order not to list Assange's arrests and the charges against him for a long time, I will only mention that he asked for political asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he is hiding to this day.

Film " Fifth Estate '' leaves an impression of some haste and confusion. Haste, because it looks like a documentary or TV program on the topic of the day, made in support of a politician persecuted by the authorities. Although the current situation with Assange does not seem to require such pamphlets, moreover, he himself did not support the idea of the movie in advance. And confusion, because Bill Condon himself is not ready to assess the situation with WikiLeaks and formulate his attitude towards Assange. Yes, and Condon's creative interests so far lay in a completely different area, although between the two vampire `` Twilight '' he directed a TV movie about Hollywood blogger Nikki Finke (Tilda, 2011).

The feeling of dynamics is created mainly by a kaleidoscope of titles with geographical names, and the movie is mostly limited to conversations, correct and beautiful reasoning about the power of information, about the need for full publicity and transparency in political, financial and other areas, about dedication to the idea of an honest journalistic investigation, about the ethical standards of the profession. The need to maintain a reasonable balance between complete transparency and common sense, because an ardent and enthusiastic search for the absolute truth is no less than dirty politics, a double-edged sword. The fact that no one will ever know the full truth, no matter how much they dig, says Assange-Cumberbatch himself in an interview at the end of the movie.

Assange's figure is very ambiguous. Autistic, Internet freak, ideologue and strategist of information warfare, an ambitious impudent person with psychological problems from childhood, a consistent revolutionary and a colossus on feet of clay, inconsiderateness embodied, whether it concerns high state affairs or the mundane destinies of those around you — it's all about him. Being in words a consistent fighter against dirty methods in financial and political activities, over time he himself begins to play no less dirty, violating his own commandments about the safety of informants, neglecting the rule of mandatory verification of sources, and denigrating the only person who for a long time was a restraining center for him exorbitant ambition. The containment center is the German programmer and hacker Daniel Berg (Daniel Bruhl), whose book underlies the script. Assange also interprets his personal history vaguely, each time inventing new options, like a young rake on a date with a new girlfriend. Whatever the name of the James Bond of modern journalism, it does not add to its attractiveness.

The movie is built on the relationship of two antipodes. The light side of the force is personified by Daniel, the dark Julian. Bruel and Cumberbatch are strong actors, but they have nowhere to turn around. It is also very pleasant to look at the most charismatic actors of our time, David Thewlis, Stanley Tucci, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, young Alicia Vikander, but their presence does not add dramatic meaning.

In a visual sense, the movie is momentarily a beautiful metaphor for the fifth estate. Several times, Condon shows a surreal room filled with endless rows of computer desks lost in the distant darkness. The viewer is apparently asked to imagine himself sitting at these computers as informers.
