On March 20, 2015, the Netflix video service unveiled Pedigree, another original in-house production series worthy of its predecessors – political thriller " House of Cards " and the drama Orange Is the New Black. Billed as a family drama, the noir-leaning series turns into a thriller by the pilot's final credits. The thirteen-part project was created by a well-established creative tandem - brothers Glenn and Todd A. Kessler and Daniel Zelman, who worked together on the TV series Skirmish, which turned from a legal drama into an interpersonal thriller.

In media interviews, all three insisted on that `` Pedigree '' - completely different, unlike the `` Fight '' project, focusing on family history. Perhaps this is so, nevertheless, already from the pilot, familiar techniques are visible, for example, the use of flashforwards, demonstrating mysterious and tragic events that will occur in the future. As in Shatka, in Pedigree everything from the characters to the show itself, at first glance, may seem not what it really is. The slowly erupting family drama set against the unreal oceanic beaches and ominous mangrove swamps of the Florida Keys, dazzling daylight and wet nights that are definitely part of the thriller is intriguing. Surely it is no coincidence that the island was chosen as the location. isolated from the big world, it, on the one hand, seems to be paradise, and on the other, a prison from which there is nowhere to escape.

In a nutshell, a story centered on the Rayburn clan, the owners of a thriving hotel on the island, significant members of the local community, after whom it was decided to name one of the marinas. This important event coincides with the 45th anniversary of the family life of the patriarchs of the family – Roberta (Sam Shepard) and Sally (Sissy Spacek), to celebrate which many friends and children of the newlyweds flock. A feeling of mild envy from the contemplation of the happiness of a `` big friendly family '' interrupted by the voiceover of the middle son – a favorite of parents – Jonah (Kyle Chandler), who warns of an impending disaster. As the synopsis for the show says, the Black Sheep, the eldest of the Rayburn children, Danny (Ben Mendelssohn), after whose return to his father's house, this house begins to crack at the seams from skeletons climbing from all the cabinets, it becomes clear what kind of trouble we are talking about. But let's not forget that we may be being led by the nose.

Here it is worth paying attention to the tagline of the series: “We are not bad people, we just did a bad deed.” And yet, at the beginning of the movie, the main character, John, says that he always believed that the best thing that happened to him in life is that he was born Rayburn. I assure you, by the end of the pilot you will be happy that you are not a Rayburn.

It is fortunate that the series is owned by Netflix and that all thirteen episodes can be watched in one or two sessions if desired. By the quality and scale of movieing `` Pedigree '' is not inferior to a good full-length movie – the panoramic aerial footage, the atmosphere, the cast and the dialogues are wonderful. The creators say that they treated the series as one big full-length movie, drawing inspiration from Cape Fear. and Fatal Attraction.

It's always interesting to watch what is really going on in someone else's house after the door closes for the last guest, especially if it is skillfully told and played. All that is hidden in the soul of each of the four young Rayburns – Danny (Mendelssohn), John (Chandler), Meg (Linda Cardellini) and Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) - in one episode you will not recognize. But the fact that they are all full of secrets and surprises is beyond question. Their act, which they call bad, is shown already in the pilot episode. He's so awful that you can't figure out what provoked him is impossible. All lovers of unexpected plot twists, mysticism (in terms of optical illusion) and psychology must watch the series.
