Elisabeth Moss to star in the drama The Handmaid's Tale
Streaming service Hulu has commissioned the production of the drama "The Handmaid's Tale," starring Top of the Lake and Mad Men star Elizabeth Moss. The ten-part project, which will debut in 2017, is based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. Production will be handled by MGM Television. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Bruce Miller ("The Hundred") wrote and will executive produce with the 1990 feature movie producer Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Warren Littlefield ("Fargo"). Atwood will act as a consultant. The drama tells the story of life in the totalitarian society of Gilead, which occupies territory formerly belonged to the United States. Experiencing environmental disasters and, as a result, declining birth rates, Gilead is ruled by a religious fundamentalism in which women are seen as the property of the state. The main character, Offred (Moss), one of the few women, "maids" who can still bear and give birth to a child, serves in the commander's house. Offred must survive surrounded by officers, their cruel wives and other "maidservants", each of whom may turn out to be a spy, in order to fulfill their goal – find the daughter who was taken away from her.
