The streaming service Netflix has extended the political drama House of Cards for a fourth season, which will begin production this summer with a 2016 premiere in mind. The Hollywood Reporter reports this with reference to the video service.

The third season of the show, during which Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) served as President of the United States, ended with his application for re-election.

Even though Netflix does not advertise rankings, the show has established itself as a strong player in the reward season since its release. House of Cards won three Emmy awards in its first season in 2013, including the Best Director of a Drama Series for David Fincher. Robin Wright, playing the role of Frank Underwood's wife, Claire, won a Golden Globe Award in 2014. Spacey himself was honored with a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award in 2015.

Spacey is also an executive producer of the series along with showrunner Bo Willimon, Joshua Donen, Eric Roth, Dan Brunetti, Andrew Davis, Michael Dobbs and Fincher.

As an adaptation of the BBC's British miniseries of the same name, House of Cards was the first Netflix original series.
