In a competitive struggle, streaming service Netflix has acquired the rights to the eight-part family comedy Atypical, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist and Michael Rapaport. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The protagonist of the TV show Robia Rashid ("How I Met Your Mother"), an autistic 18-year-old Sam (Gilchrist, "United States of Tara"), is trying to find love and become independent. His funny and at times painful journey to find himself puts the whole family on the ears and forces them all to change their own lives as, it turns out, they were struggling with what it means to be normal. Lee (The Hateful Eight) will play Sam's mother Elsa, that re-opens itself. Rapaport ("Justice") got the role of Sam's father, Doug. Bridget Lundy-Payne ("The Glass Castle") will play Sam's sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda ("How to Avoid Punishment for Murder") – Sam's therapist, Julia.

Rashid created the series and is the writer for the show. She will team up with Goldberg co-star Seth Gordon, who will executive produce and direct the pilot.

The dark comedy will begin production later this year in Los Angeles.
