Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Diane Keaton (Annie Hall, Love By Rules ... and Beyond) will partner with Jude Law in the upcoming HBO series, Young Daddy. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The eight-part project follows the fictional American pope, Pius XIII (Lowe), nee Lenny Belardo, who becomes one of the most conservative leaders of the Catholic Church in its history. Not recognizing the flattery of the Vatican's sycophants and full of compassion for the weak and the poor, Pius faces the prospect of losing everyone close to him, even God.

Keaton will play Sister Mary, a US nun now living in the Vatican.

"The Young Pope" will be the first television project by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino ("Great Beauty"). He will direct all eight episodes, which he co-wrote with Tony Grisoni, Umberto Contarello and Stefano Ruli.

Describing the series, Sorrentino said about it: "Clear signs of the existence of God. Clear signs of the absence of God. How faith can be gained and lost. The greatness of holiness is as beautiful as it is unbearable when you resist temptations and when all you can do is succumb to them. The inner struggle between the great responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the suffering of the common man whose destiny (or the Holy Spirit) chose as Pontiff. Finally, how to handle and manage power in the state, whose dogma and moral imperative is the renunciation of power and selfless love for one's neighbor. This is what The Young Pope is about.

The HBO and Sky co-production will begin production in Italy in the coming days.

For Keaton, participating in the project means returning to HBO where in 2003 she acted as an executive producer of the movie "Elephant", which became the winner of the Cannes Film Festival.
