The director's nomination was won by Roman Polanski, who shot a movie based on real events called "The Officer and the Spy." This movie was the leader in the number of nominations: in total, he claimed 12 awards and received three of them. Polanski himself had previously announced that he would not be present at the ceremony. "Activists threaten me with public lynching. Some are calling for demonstrations, others are planning to make a political platform out of it.
