Mikhail Devyatayev graduated from the Chkalov Aviation School. He took part in the Great Patriotic War from its first days. In 1944, his plane was shot down in battle, the pilot landed by parachute in enemy territory and was captured. He ended up in a concentration camp near the secret German training ground Peenemunde, where the tests of ballistic missiles "FAU-2" were going on. In February 1945, several Soviet prisoners of war, led by Devyatayev, managed to capture the German Heinkel 111 bomber and escape on it. The fighters sent in pursuit failed to shoot down the plane of the fugitives. On the front line, the bomber was fired upon by Soviet anti-aircraft guns and made an emergency landing at the location of the artillery unit.

After that, he ended up in the NKVD camp, where he waited for his fate until the end of the war. In September 1945, he was rescued by Sergei Korolev, the head of the Soviet missile program, and was recruited as a consultant for the survey of German missile ranges.

Already in the 50s, under pressure from the same Queen, Mikhail Devyatayev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
