Lionsgate has acquired the rights to director Roland Emmerich's as-yet-to-be-released movie, The Battle of Midway. According to Deadline, the deal was made at a movie market held as part of the Toronto Film Festival.

The movie's production budget is estimated at $ 100 million. At the time of this writing, he did not yet have an approved cast or even an approximate shooting schedule. “We look forward to telling the story of one of the biggest naval battles in history, with the help of a first-class team led by Roland Emmerich. This epic project will be in demand by audiences around the world,” Lionsgate spokesman Patrick Waxberger commented on the agreement. >

Recall that the Battle of the Pacific Atoll of Midway took place in June 1942. The Japanese fleet suffered a crushing defeat, losing four aircraft carriers, one heavy cruiser, and about 300 aircraft. After this battle, Japan was forever deprived of the opportunity to conduct hostilities in the open ocean.

For the first time, Emmerich's readiness to movie this episode of World War II was announced during the International Cannes Film Festival in May 2017.
