In this article, we'll show you how to create and set up an account in the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client.

About the Mozilla Thunderbird email client

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email client. It includes messaging, newsfeed, chat and account control for each mailbox.

Installing the Mozilla Thunderbird email client

You can download the free version of the Mozilla Thunderbird client from the official website of the program manufacturer. Installation is standard and does not cause any difficulties.

Creating an account in the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client

When you open it for the first time, the program suggests:

  • get a new email address on the domains the Mozilla Thunderbird developers work with;
  • enter an existing email address (Fig. 1);
  • Skip the previous step and log into your email client without setting up an account.

If the user already has an email address, they should click " Skip this and use my existing mail ". The " Mail Account Settings " window will open (Figure 2).

  • In the field " Your name " you need to enter the name that the mail recipients will see when receiving letters.
  • In the field “ Email address mail ”enter the full address, including the @ (dog) symbol, and the domain. For example: [email   protected]
  • In the field " Password ", respectively, indicate the password for the mailbox.

In older versions of the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client, you would then need to manually configure the incoming and outgoing mail server, which is individual for each domain. For example, for the site www.mail.ru it would be necessary to specify "pop.mail.ru" as the incoming mail server, and "smtp.mail.ru" for outgoing mail.

In the modern version of the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client, this function is fully automated, and the servers for outgoing and incoming mail for each domain are located in the database on the manufacturer's website. Therefore, the program itself scans the domain of the specified e-mail box, determines and sets the optimal settings (Fig. 3). But this is possible only if you have access to the Internet.

The key difference between the protocols for accessing IMAP and POP3 email is that when using IMAP , all emails are stored on the mailbox server, but the mail client will see them as if they are all directly on the user's computer. By selecting POP3 , all emails will be downloaded to your computer's hard drive in full.

Account Management in Mozilla Thunderbird Email Client

On the left side of the main window there is a list of folders: " Inbox ", " Sent items ", etc. Each of them will contain letters corresponding to them. If you have several mailboxes, you will have to go to the program settings and add as many accounts as you plan to use. To do this, go to the section " Settings " - " Account Settings " (Fig. 4).

As a result, a window will open as in Fig. 5. Here you can add a mail, chat or news feed account. It is also worth paying attention to the item “ Add another account ”, but its functionality is the same as in “ News feed account ”.

When adding a new mail account, the familiar " Mail Account Setup " window (Figure 2) will open, which must also be completed.

So, by understanding how the Mozilla Thunderbird email client works, you can greatly simplify the management of the basic functions for receiving and sending emails.
