Not Just LA Noire: 15 Great Detective Games

Image

The detective game Blacksad: Under The Skin was released this month. We rarely see quality games in this genre. They come out from time to time rather than constantly. However, the format allows for experimentation, and detective games can always surprise and hook a large audience, as they are presented both in action and in visual novels. Here are 15 detective games that are of particular interest.

Grim Fandango

Image

This game tells about the kingdom of the dead. The main character, Menny Calavera, works as a travel agent in the Department of the Dead. He sells tickets to the deceased for a four-year journey to eternal rest. However, he finds himself embroiled in a strange conspiracy and his own soul is at stake. This is a classic quest filled with the atmosphere of Mexican Naur with specific humor, memorable characters and a complex, convoluted story.

The Wolf Among Us

Image

Not one such top is complete without two games, and the first of them is The Wolf Among Us. This is a twisted interpretation of classic Telltale fairy tales, where we will investigate a murder in an alternative New York, where fairy-tale characters live alongside ordinary people. And we will play for the evil and terrible gray wolf Bigby Wolfe. The game starts with that. That we find on our doorstep the severed head of Snow White, and investigating this case we get involved in a magical conspiracy. The game is based on the comic book series by Bill Ulligham. The game itself is notable for its cool setting and story, as this was the period when Telltale was still making good games.

LA Noire

And the second must-have in the top of the best detective games is LA Noire [after all, this game is in the title, you knew for sure that it would be here]. However, this is not just the case. This is a gorgeous crime thriller inspired by dozens of detective books and films. It's a slow, methodical game of searching for evidence and interrogating suspects, set in an authentic and detailed 1940s Los Angeles setting. The game is knocked out of the standard projects released by Rockstar. And the story is similar to a well-thought-out show, in which brutal serial murders, car thefts and arson cases are intertwined. The game is more linear than it seems at first glance, but the rich atmosphere and intriguing incidents completely absorb your attention.

Shenmue

As Ryo Hazuki, we chase a Chinese cartel man named Lan Di, who killed the 16-year-old's father in front of him. Our path of revenge will be very long and for you to understand, the author released the sequel only recently after 18 years. We have to communicate with many people, keep records in our diary and piece together a complete picture of how and why our father was killed. The game also has an excellent action component, plus some fighting game elements and the rich atmosphere of 80s Japan. Overall, the first two games were revolutionary in their day.

Fahrenheit

Image

Fahrenheit is an incredibly intense thriller. The main character discovers that he is in a public toilet, his hands are covered in the blood of the man he just killed, and he does not remember anything. First, we act out for him and hide from the scene of the crime, and then we switch to two detectives who are investigating this case. The game's plot develops in parallel. In addition, a strange abnormal cold snap is approaching the city. The confusing mess and a fair amount of QTE may seem like a drawback, but the story of the global freeze itself is worth it.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Image

The visual novel tells the story of the most talented students from all over Japan, who are closed in a prestigious academy by its director, the mad bear Monokuma. He puts on a survival game where one student must secretly kill another. After that, everyone else gathers in one room and must figure out the killer. If caught, Monokuma kills him, and if the killer manages not to reveal himself, then he gets freedom. You are one of these schoolchildren trapped in the academy and forced to survive in this madness.

Among them are a father whose son has gone missing, an FBI agent in charge of this killer, a journalist, and a private investigator conducting his own investigation.

Players will have to make choices, many of which can change the outcome of the game, and even if someone dies, the game will not end there. You can, both get into the network of the killer, and determine it, or you can lose important characters, whose death will definitely not lead to anything good.
