16 Most Anticipated RPGs of 2020

Image

2019 was not rich in a lot of RPGs, but at least we got a couple of mind-blowing projects like The Outer Worlds and Disco Elysium. The next RPG 2020 promises to be bigger, both in quantity and content. If you want to celebrate the most anticipated RPGs of 2020, then here's our own list.

Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI

We put these two projects on a par for two reasons - these are Bethesda projects, and it is not known if they will be released in 2020.

We just want to know at least something. Little is known about Starfield. It was announced by the studio in 2018 as a next-gen console project, expected to be released before the sixth scrolls. All we can assume is that this is a sci-fi RPG set in a space setting.

We have no more information about The Elder Scrolls VI. It was also announced in 2018, only saying that the game was in development. We don't know what The Elder Scrolls VI will be about, although we assume the game will take place in Hammerfell. The release date is still unknown. Whether Bethesda will be able to return to service again or will fall into the mud - we will probably find out as early as next year. Hopefully we'll see at least a new engine ...

Darkest Dungeon 2

Darkest Dungeon, released in 2016, has remained in the hearts of many PRG roguelike fans. The sequel is expected to be released next year, and from the big changes we will have a large ice location, as well as a redesigned quest system. There are few details, but if you played the first part, you are probably already waiting for the sequel.

Wasteland 3

Next year, the father of post-apocalypse, the Wasteland series, will also return. It was the first part that gave birth to the setting of a destroyed world back in 1988. The development of the sequel was stuck in production hell and only saw the light of day at the beginning of this decade. Fallout dominated this territory at the time, and everyone expected something like this. However, Wasteland 2 came out completely different, which was good, as it did not lose its identity. After a few at least many years, we will see the triquel.

We have to explore the frozen lands of Colorado, controlling the last surviving canoe of the ranger squad. Turn-based combat, isometrics, both solo and team play, storyline and tough moral choices are what we will surely see in the game.

System Shock

And one more comeback [and next year it is almost entirely made up of them] is a remake of the cult game of 1995, where we will fight various cyborgs. The development is headed by Chris Avellone, and the remake itself is being sawed on Unreal Engine 4. The game is also going to be finished after release. As they say, thank you for your honesty. Although, this is rather done to add some ideas that will not be included in the release version itself.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

The Yakuza series, which until then was a purebred action game with an emphasis on combat, by the seventh part turned into a JRPG with turn-based combat, like in the Persona series. After completing the story of Kazuma Kiryu, the studio developer decided to completely change the game and start the story from scratch, with the character Ichi voluntarily going to prison at the request of his patriarch. When he leaves, it turns out that no one cares about him and he will not receive the promised benefits for his release. The game will tell the story of Ichi's ascent in the underworld. We discussed in detail what to expect from the game here.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

The sequel to the cult Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines will throw us in the role of a young vampire in the war of groups for Seattle. The developers at Hardsuit Labs want to give us maximum freedom in choosing a side and playing the game in different ways.

Each of our choices will be displayed on the world, and adapt to our style of play. How exactly this will work - we do not yet know, but the emphasis will clearly be on how you maintain your humanity. Also, developers are focusing on our abilities. So that we really feel that we have a vampire superpower, because in the first part, despite its presence, any homeless person could send us to the next world. The game has been pushed back to mid-to-late 2020 to be perfect. Again, read more about the game separately.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Another comeback of the legend - Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. According to the developers, we will get what we expect from Mount & Blade in principle, namely: complete freedom of choice in who we are, large-scale conflicts, sieges, battles, trade and intrigue. Changes: new graphics and improved controls. In general, the little things, but significantly. For example, now you can command only one squad, and not an entire army that will devour all your money. While the 2020 launch is just Early Access, it's still good news.

Read the translation of the interview with the Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, where they detail what awaits us in the game.

Tales of Arise

Next year we will have two big RPGs from Bandai Namco. The first of them is the large-scale and ambitious Tales of Arise, the continuation of the famous series. We will have two main characters from different planets, the first, technologically advanced Rena, and the second, similar to the Middle Ages Dakhna.

The rulers of Rena staged genocide in the lands of Dakhna. Our heroes are going to restore justice and stop the destruction of the planet. Like the previous game Tales of Berseria, the new one uses the RPG mechanics of the Motion Battle System. Details are not yet known, but the game certainly looks very ambitious.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

And the second project is probably one of the largest games in the Dragon Ball franchise - Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, the authors are going to meticulously retell the entire story of Goku hunting for dragonball and close some plot holes.

An action RPG awaits us, where we will not only fight, but also fish, train and explore locations together with other characters. We are also promised dizzying boss fights in completely destroyed locations. In addition, other heroes will be available to us.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel

When the sequel Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced at E3 this year, people in the audience jumped for joy, shouted and threw popcorn. And it is not surprising, this part of the franchise turned out to be simply amazing, and even tried to dethrone the king - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Huge open and bright world, cool mechanics and storyline.

We don't have much information and all we know is the trailer shown at E3, where Link and Zelda descend into the caves under Hyrule, witnessing the awakening of something dangerous. We expect new areas to be explored into the game, as well as reworking old ones. If the game doesn't come out next year, we will definitely learn at least something new.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy games are a cult following, and fans have enjoyed them for years. However, there are a few parts that have become legendary. So, we will see a remake of just such a legendary seventh part next year.

The plot of the game will remain intact, but the authors decided to rethink everything else. First of all, this concerns the turn-based combat system, which has changed towards battles as in Kingdom Hearts. The game is so big that it will be released in parts, the action of the first part, which will take place in Midgard, will be released on two PS4 discs at once, it is so big.

Cyberpunk 2077

I'm not afraid of this word, but we came to the king of RPG 2020 - Cyberpunk 2077. This is the brainchild of our beloved studio CD Project Red. We will plunge headlong into the world of the cyber future, where, playing a mercenary from a gang of samurai, we will fight together with Joni Silverhand against companies, syndicates and gangs.

We have the greatest trust in the studio for the reason that it won it with the Witcher series. We will be given tremendous freedom in choosing who to be, how to go through the plot, and the quests will be lined up according to the weaving system when they are interconnected, plus there are many endings in the game. This will allow us to replay the game several times in order to get new impressions. We wait, we believe, we praise.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood

And here is the second game of the world of darkness this year. In addition to the fact that we will have to understand the vampire motions of Seattle, in 2020 we will have another project on the World of Darkness. Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood invites us to play as a werewolf who will fight against the Pentex company, which is destroying mother nature. It is run by vampires.

The main character is called Kahal. He is kicked out of the tribe, but this does not prevent him from continuing his struggle. Kahal can change forms, be human, and also transform into a werewolf or wolf. All of them will help to explore the surrounding world and communicate with its inhabitants.

King's Bounty II

And one more comeback, but already domestic. King's Bounty II is an RPG with turn-based strategy elements. The spirit of the original game has remained unchanged and we will also see magicians, trolls and elves in the sequel. Even more, new elements will be introduced into the game, and now we can explore the world from the third person, and move from the top view on the global map and the battlefield. The battlefield is divided into hexagonal cells, they have a limit on the number of standing units. Each unit has a level, thanks to which they have new abilities and skills.

The game will be more of a restart than a sequel, so a completely new story awaits us.

Rune 2

After the events of the first part, the gods, people and animals are still fighting for survival. The setting inherits Scandinavia and its traditions. Our main character swears allegiance to one of the gods, and then goes into the open world to explore it. The emphasis will be placed on brutal hand-to-hand combat, where they want to show us in detail the consequences of being wounded with melee weapons.

Elden Ring

This project is being created in collaboration between From Software and George R.R. Martin. Martin writes a twisted, epic script for the game with long dialogues, and, of course, his trademark cruelty. But no one will forget about the action in the game.

The game itself will be in an open world. In turn, the creators of Dark Souls spice up the game with their signature hardcore.
