China starts production of high power safety batteries for smartphones

China is launching a project of a fundamentally new version of the power source - it is a solid-state battery, which is going to replace modern electric batteries in smartphones in the future. The device of such batteries has significant advantages, primarily in terms of safety.

The project is owned by a Chinese startup called Qing Tao, which was founded by a team of university developers.

A more compact solid-state battery has the main feature that distinguishes it from modern batteries - instead of a liquid, it is based on a solid electrolyte with special characteristics.

The founders invested about $ 126 million in their own project, built a production conveyor line and already have first customers, whose names have not yet been disclosed. The company plans to launch the production of batteries with an energy density of up to 400 W * h / kg, and their capacity should grow to 700 MW * h.

Lithium-ion batteries, ubiquitous in electronic devices, are not without critical drawbacks. They are sensitive to changes in external temperature, have an average energy density, and, most importantly, are unsafe and can explode. There is no need to look far for an example, cases of the explosion of smartphones, including the flagship model GalaxyNote 7, happened more than once. For this reason, a solid state battery can be a good alternative as a power source. Batteries containing a liquid electrolyte, with frequent use of the fast charging method, are not without the risk of accelerated degradation.

In contrast to them, a battery with a solid electrolyte wins in several respects: its energy density is higher, which makes it possible to reduce its size and weight. A lithium-ion battery with an identical density rating will be larger in weight and size. A solid-state battery is safer as it is less prone to overheating, and it also has better endurance to a large number of recharges.
