The coronavirus has reached Comic-Con

Image The largest and most famous fan festival in North America has been canceled for the first time in its history. According to the organizers of Comic-Con in San Diego, the reason for this was the coronavirus pandemic. The large-scale event, which annually gathers about 130 thousand people at its sites, was supposed to take place from 23 to 26 July.

Anyone who has already purchased an invite to Comic-Con 2020 will receive instructions via email on how to get their money back. The organizers are not even considering the transfer of the convention to other dates, so the next time Americans will be able to get together in the costumes of their favorite heroes only in July 2021.

This decision was made after the speech of the Governor of California Gavin Newsom, who announced in his speech that in the foreseeable future“no large-scale events involving the interaction of thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people are planned”. When asked about specific dates, he answered evasively, but still said that such festivals"in June, July and August are very unlikely".

In an official statement, the organizers of the convention say that, looking at their colleagues in the workshop, who are postponing certain festivals to later dates, they also hoped to postpone Comic-Con, but due to its scale and uncertainty about the timing of the end of the pandemic, they still realized that"it's not safe to move forward yet".

Comic-Con was one of the last major industry events to fall victim to the coronavirus. Previously, the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival, the WonderCon fan convention and many others had to revise their plans. Kinotavr moved to USA from summer to autumn.

Comic-Con was founded in 1970 and got its current name, San Diego Comic-Con (or SDCC) in 73. Every year, due to the growth of the industry itself in general and high-budget genre projects in particular, the influx of participants and visitors to the event increased. For many major market players, directors, showrunners, authors of books and comics, SDCC has become the most important tool for promoting projects, but for fans it was just a big and fun holiday, and at the same time the brightest cosplay festival.
