In recent years, USA cinema has made significant strides in the sports drama genre. Spectators attended the games of the first hockey Super Series and saw the ending of the basketball tournament of the 1972 Olympics, and ahead of them is a tense match for the title of world chess champion.Nikita Mikhalkov's Trite studio, Rossiya channel, Central Partnership and the GPM KIT group of companies have begun filming the biographical drama World Champion. The film will take the audience to 1978 and tell about the confrontation between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi. The match for the world title took place in the Philippines. The fight for the chess crown was politically motivated: in 1976, Korchnoi fled the USSR to Holland and began playing under the flag of Switzerland. Naturally, the press dubbed the match a confrontation between the Soviets and the rest of the world. The teams of Karpov and Korchnoi decided that any means were good for victory. The Swiss were unhappy with the fact that the Soviet delegation brought a hypnotist and violated the tournament regulations: during one of the games Karpov's coaches handed over blueberry yogurt to the table, which could be a coded message about a change in game tactics. In turn, the Soviet side protested because Korchnoi brought members of the Ananda Marga movement into the hall and played in mirrored sunglasses.  A series of threats, insults and mutual reproaches have heated the situation to the limit. Fortunately, the match itself did not disappoint. The game went on until six wins. After 27 games Karpov was leading 5-2. Korchnoi won three of the next four games, but at the last moment the Soviet chess player was lucky. The director's chair of the film will be taken by Alexey Sidorov (Brigade, T-34), and the main roles will be played by Konstantin Khabensky, Ivan Yankovsky, Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Viktor Dobronravov, Diana Pozharskaya and Viktor Sukhorukov.
