Galina Volchek died
USA cinema and theatrical art has suffered another irreparable loss. Galina Volchek, artistic director of the Sovremennik Theater, died in Moscow at the age of 87.Galina Borisovna was born on December 19, 1933 in the family of a cameraman and screenwriter, so she was interested in cinema and theater from an early age. In 1955, Galina graduated from the Moscow Art Theater. A year later, together with Oleg Efremov and friends from the university, she organized a studio of young actors, which became the basis of the famous Moscow theater "Sovremennik". Volchek made her directing debut in 1962 with William Gibson's play Two on a Swing. The performance was a huge success, and its director was named the rising star of the Soviet theater. Galina Borisovna fully justified the advances issued. In 1966, she won the USSR State Prize for her work on the play "An Ordinary History", and three years later she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. In 1972, Volchek became the chief director of Sovremennik, and in 1989 - its artistic director. During her long and successful career in the theater, she has staged more than 30 performances, many of which are known far beyond the borders of our country.  Galina Borisovna proved herself not only as a brilliant director, but also as a talented actress. She made her big-screen debut in 1957 with Don Quixote. Since then, she has often delighted the audience with small but vivid roles. Fans of cinema, of course, remember her heroines from "Beware of the Car", "King Lear", "Autumn Marathon" and other hits of the Soviet period. Volchek also has several popular performance films - from the film version of An Ordinary Story to the film adaptation of Remarque's Three Comrades. Volchek's services to national art were awarded the titles of People's Artist and Hero of Labor.
