Franco Zeffirelli died this morning. One of the greatest people of world culture, ”the mayor of the city shared on Twitter. The director had recently been seriously ill and died, surrounded by family and friends, on his estate in Florence. A civil funeral service will be held in Rome, on the Capitol Hill, and the maestro will rest in the Florentine necropolis of Porte Sante.

Franco Zeffirelli was born in 1923 in Florence, Tuscany. There, he studied at the Academy of Arts, and then got to a local university, where he began to study architecture and painting. When World War II broke out, Franco enrolled in the Italian Resistance Movement. In 1945, Zeffirelli returned to his homeland to finish his studies, but soon decided to take up theater and cinema. The director is known for such works as "Jane Eyre" (1996), "Hamlet" (1990) with Mel Gibson, "The Taming of the Shrew" (1967). Two of his works were nominated for an Oscar - La Traviata (1982) and Romeo and Juliet (1968).
