The Elric Saga to Become a TV Series

Image The success of the adaptation of "A Song of Ice and Fire" opened the way for many literary hits about swords and magic on TV. Netflix will unveil the first season of The Witcher next month, and rivals from Amazon are about to begin filming the Lord of the Rings prequel. Today another holiday has come to the street of fantasy lovers. New Republic Pictures has acquired the rights to create a TV series based on the Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock.

The title character made his debut on the pages of Moorcock's works in 1961. Four years later, the English science fiction writer combined the stories about Elric into the first novel, The Stormy Man. Today the franchise includes the so-called canonical six-book, a series of spin-offs, novels by other authors and several comics.

Murcock's books take readers to the island state of Melnibone. Elric appears as a wise ruler and a powerful wizard, but a physically weak person who drinks decoctions to maintain fragile health. Additional strength to the emperor is given by the magic sword Stormy, which absorbs the souls of defeated enemies.

In the middle of the last decade, Universal was thinking about creating a trilogy about Elric, but in the end the project was never realized. Now the hero of the book epic will try his luck on television. The series will be developed by Glen Mazzara ("The Walking Dead") and Vaughn Wilmott ("Sons of Anarchy", "Star Trek: Discovery"). Given the increased interest in fantasy-themed serial dramas, New Republic Pictures executives are unlikely to find it difficult to attach the Elric Saga to a popular channel or online service.
