Amazon Launches The Wheel of Time

Image Over the past few years, online service Amazon has presented viewers with many great series of various genres - from the crime comedy "Sneaky Pete" to the political action thriller "Jack Ryan". However, science fiction and fantasy are a special passion of the head of an American corporation. Over the past year alone, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos saved the popular science fiction show Expansion from closure and acquired the rights to create a series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Now one of the richest people in the world presented another luxurious present to fantasy fans. As Deadline has learned, Amazon has ordered the production of the first season of the television adaptation of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time.

The path of the cult fantasy cycle to the screens was long and thorny. The first book in the series, The Eye of the World, was published in 1990 and immediately became a hit. Over the years, the cycle has grown to 14 books and sold a total circulation of 80 million copies. Despite the immense popularity of the Jordan saga, previous attempts to film it turned into a loud fiasco. At first, NBC could not find the keys to the adaptation of The Wheels of Time, then the project went under the wing of Universal Pictures, and as a result, a leapfrog arose with the rights to the books, which was resolved only in 2016.

Last spring, we reported that the heirs of Robert Jordan had entrusted the work on the series to the television department of Sony Pictures. Rafe Judkins (4400, Agents of SHIELD) took over as showrunner for the ambitious project.

The work of the talented screenwriter made the most pleasant impression on the bosses of American TV channels and streaming giants. The most lucrative offer to Sony Pictures Television was made by Amazon, which will surely provide the series with a solid budget. Earlier it became known that Bezos plans to spend about $ 1 billion on tele-travel around the world of "The Lord of the Rings".
