Nomads and comrades of Konchalovsky: results of the 77th Venice Film Festival
The film industry will have to overcome the consequences of the pandemic for a long time. Due to the coronavirus, viewers did not see, and will not see until next year, a number of high-profile premieres. What can we say about film festivals, which were canceled one after another in the wake of the pandemic. However, the organizers of the Venice Review decided to hold the event, albeit more modestly - with a number of restrictions for guests for their own safety. Many of the premieres were held outdoors, with a limited number of visitors and the obligatory attribute of a mask. The same can be said about the closing of the festival: it took place in a half-empty hall, and some winners preferred to receive their prizes virtually.The 77th Venice Film Festival, which took place from 2 to 12 September, ended in Italy. The jury this year was headed by actress Cate Blanchett, and 18 films were nominated for the main prize of the show, the Golden Lion award. The completed festival will definitely go down in history not only because of the coronavirus, but because for the first time in ten years, the Golden Lion was awarded to a film directed by a woman. The jury of the show, as well as critics, were conquered by the drama of Chloe Zhao "The Land of the Nomads". Frances McDormand played in the film a widow from a small town in Nevada, going through hard times. Due to circumstances, the woman is forced to change her lifestyle: she packs a suitcase and goes to roam the western United States in a mobile home. Analysts are already tipping the Land of Nomads and McDormand herself nominations for the Oscar.  We will find out next year whether the film academics will appreciate Francis's play, but the jury of the Venice Festival awarded the prize for the leading female role to another actress - Vanessa Kirby. The British very convincingly played a woman who lost her child in the film Fragments of a Woman. The film, by the way, became the English-language debut for the Hungarian director Kornel Mundrutso, a regular at various international shows.  The title of best actor this year was awarded to the Italian Pierfrancesco Favino, who played the main role in the autobiographical drama Our Father. But the award named after Marcello Mastroianni, awarded to the best young talent, was taken by Ruhola Zamani for his performance in the Iranian drama Sunny Children.  The Grand Prix of the Venice Film Festival went to Michel Franco, who presented the utopian thriller New Order, which shows the brutal and bloody usurpation of power by the rich Mexican ruling class. The jury recognized Kiyoshi Kurosawa as the best director for the historical drama Spy's Wife, which takes place shortly before the start of World War II. The picture "The Apprentice" was named the best screenplay. Its author is Chaitanya Tamhane.  USA cinema did not go unnoticed at the Venice Film Festival either. This year Andrey Konchalovsky presented his new work at the show. His drama "Dear Comrades!", Dedicated to the brutal execution of a demonstration of Soviet workers in 1962, took part in the Main Competition and was eventually awarded a special jury prize.
